“The very things that hold you down are going to lift you up!”

The small yet inspirational Timothy Mouse once told a clumsy, young elephant, “the very things that hold you down are going to lift you up, up, up!” Of course when Timothy spoke these words to Dumbo, he meant that his big ears would lift him up, but this quote goes much deeper than just that in not only the film, but in life as well.

Dumbo was different than all the other elephants, thanks to two gigantic and floppy ears. Not only that, but he was torn away from his mother when he was just a baby. It’s safe to say that Dumbo did not have the easiest upbringing, but what Timothy is telling Dumbo is that all of those negative experiences in the end will lift Dumbo up, not only literally but figuratively as well. These events shaped Dumbo, just like how this can happen to a person in life. Experiences that may hold someone down, can eventually shape that person into a better person, and lift them up.

I know this quote is true from first hand experience watching someone close to me deal with a chronic disease. The disease dragged him down to some of his lowest points in life, but has also shaped him into the man he is today. The experiences he dealt with thanks to the disease made him a better person, turned him into a positive person, and made him appreciate the little things in life. I have learned so much from him, and I continue to be inspired every single day through this rollercoaster of a disease. Although the disease may have held him down for a while, it is now lifting him up, up, up, just like Dumbo.

To learn more about this chronic disease and my friend’s story, you can read a story I wrote about him here. Also, you can help donate to find a cure for this chronic disease here. Every bit helps, and remember that positivity goes a long way.
